HOW TO TAKE THE EXAMS TO BECOME A FIREFIGHTER, POLICE OFFICER, OR COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Entry-level, competitive exams are given throughout the state by the Office of State Examiner, or OSE. It is not necessary to take the exams in the jurisdiction in which you wish to work. A passing score on the Firefighter, Police Officer, Fire Communications Officer, and Police Communications Officer exams can be reported to the jurisdiction of your choice. Follow the instructions below to find an exam date.

Call the OSE testing information line at 225-925-4567. Have a pen/pencil and paper handy.

  • The exams are listed by jurisdiction, exam date, application deadline, and the contact person's information.
  • The recording is updated as the information changes.
  • Exams are removed when the application deadline has passed.

On this website:

  • Look at the menu on the left of the screen. Click on Testing & Employment.
  • Choose the exam you wish to take.
  • The information is separated into six sections: Exam Date, Application Deadline, Jurisdiction Name, Contact Person, Study Guide, and Qualification Requirements.
  • Qualification Requirements gives information each jurisdiction requires for an applicant to be eligible to take the exam.
  • YOU MUST MEET THE APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE JURISDICTION WHERE YOU WILL TAKE THE EXAM. It does not matter which jurisdiction you wish to work for at this stage. If you do not meet the requirements for one jurisdiction then check another. Keep checking back to that page for other jurisdictions where you may meet the requirements.
  • Exam dates are being added on a continous basis. There will be times where there are no exams listed. This just means that at the time the website was updated there were no requests. Once again, keep checking back.
  • Call the contact person listed. Verify that the jurisdiction accepts the competitive application found on this website.
  • You will be told the jurisdictions procedures for accepting applications and what additional information that may be required.
  • Verify the mailing address and whether they accept applications any other way.
  • The Office of State Examiner does NOT accept or process applications.

After you have submitted your application, and it has been approved, the civil service board will notify you by mail of the exam's date, location, and time.

After receiving a passing exam score:

  • Contact the jurisdiction where you wish to work. Find out what their procedures are for accepting a score being reported from another jurisdiction.
  • This office does NOT notify applicants of their score.
  • Scores are sent to the examining jurisdiction within 4 to 6 weeks of the exam date.
  • Your score is good for 18 months from the day the examining jurisdiction's civil service board meets to approve the test scores.
  • We recommend that you make copies of your score as you will need to contact the examining jurisdiction for another copy.

The second option on the menu to the left is a list of the jurisdictions that are currently within the Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service.
